The Basics
In the first Lifelong Learning course “The Basics”, you learned a lot in terms of pronunciation, listening comprehension and language production.
We covered the grammar topics below from chapter 1 to 11 in our textbook. Click on the bold links for the class handouts as word.docs. When you click on the blue “view” button, the document will be displayed in HTML format, not the best way to view some of the handouts.
Chapter 1
- personal pronouns
- word order (finite verb>second position) in statements (main clauses) and questions with question words (=information questions)

- verb endings in the present tense

- word order in Yes or No questions
Chapter 4
- addressing people: formal and informal YOU
Chapter 5
- gender: masculine, feminine, neuter
- definite articles: der, die, das = the
- indefinite articles: ein, eine, ein = a, an
